As the Founding Pastor of Calvary Baptist Church, Robert Mullis certainly remembers many people he has seen come to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ.

It might seem unusual for a youth minister/pastor to spend 25 years at the same local church, but that is exactly what Kenneth (Ken) Dembeck has done.

Robert Mullis, originally from Miami, Florida was attending the University of Florida when he accepted Jesus Christ as His Savior. At age 19, he left Miami to attend Baptist Bible College in Springfield, Missouri where he graduated in 1961. He worked with a church in Texas for six months and then returned to Miami to serve at his home church for 4 months.

Pastor Mullis felt called to start an Independent Baptist Church, so he headed to Leesburg, FL to do just that. At the time, there were four or five Southern Baptist churches in the area, but no Independent Baptist churches. "We started from nothing," Robert Mullis said, "and the rest is pretty much history. I didn't think the Lord wanted us any other place."

Pastor Mullis pastored the church he founded for 51 years and 8 months. He preached his last message, as Pastor, on December 29th, 2013, on his 76th birthday. In January 2014, Pastor Mullis passed the "mantle" of pastoring to Kenneth Dembeck who has been serving at Calvary for twenty-five years.

Pastor Mullis has been more than a mentor to Pastor Dembeck, and will continue as a working lay member with Calvary Baptist Church. The church has an average attendance of about 200 and is blessed to be able to support more than 100 missionaries.

Pastor Mullis and his wife, Gay, reside in Fruitland Park, FL.

About The Pastor

Calvary Baptist Church

Ken Dembeck moved from Baltimore, Maryland to Fort Lauderdale, Florida in his late teens. While in Fort Lauderdale, he was saved and also married his wife, Kandice (Kandee). Ken and Kandee moved north from Fort Lauderdale and found Calvary Baptist Church. It was at Calvary that he was called into the youth ministry. A missionary to Korea came to the church and was speaking of the world being full of kids needing to hear about Jesus. "I told my wife I could do that," he said. The husband and wife team soon found themselves in Lynchburg, Virginia where both had received scholarships from Liberty University.

After the Dembecks graduated from Liberty University, Robert Mullis, Pastor of  Calvary Baptist Church, asked Ken to come back to Calvary to work with the teens for a little while. Ken and Kandee have been at Calvary ever since. Pastor Dembeck never felt called to go anywhere else. In January 2014, Ken Dembeck became Pastor of Calvary Baptist Church. The founding Pastor of Calvary Baptist, Robert Mullis, passed the "mantle" of leadership to him.

Ken and Kandee have one son, Kollin, who is a student at Pensacola Christian College, Pensacola, Florida.

The Dembecks live in Lady Lake, FL.
